Sunset Picnic in Bali: Best Spots and What to Pack
Few things in Bali beat a blanket on the sand, a cold drink and the sky turning orange over the Indian Ocean. A sunset picnic costs a fraction of a beach club table, and you choose the view, the company and the food.
The catch is the heat. Bali sits around 30°C most of the year, and a picnic that looked perfect at 4pm can be warm and tired by the time the sun drops. This guide covers where to go, when to arrive, what to pack and which foods actually survive the trip.
Best spots for a sunset picnic in Bali
The west and south-west coast faces the sunset, so most of the best spots run from Canggu down to Uluwatu.
Batu Belig Beach, Kerobokan
Quieter than Seminyak and only a few minutes north of it. The wide sand makes it easy to find your own patch, and it is a short drive from most villas in Kerobokan, Umalas and Seminyak.
Seminyak Beach and Double Six
The easiest option if you are staying nearby. Expect more people and more music from the beach bars, but plenty of space at low tide and a classic Bali sunset straight ahead.
Echo Beach, Canggu
Known for its surf break, so the view comes with surfers catching the last waves of the day. The sand here is darker and the shoreline rockier, so bring a thick blanket or a mat.
Karang Boma Cliff, Uluwatu
A grassy slope above the ocean with one of the most dramatic views on the island. The grass makes it far more comfortable than sand. Stay well back from the edge and expect a queue at the famous photo point.
Jimbaran Beach
A long, calm bay that is gentler than the surf beaches up north. A good choice for families and anyone who wants to sit close to the water without big waves.
Nusa Dua Beach
Clean, calm and well kept. The sunset view is less direct than on the west coast, but it is one of the safest and most relaxed places for a picnic with kids.
When to go
Bali is close to the equator, so sunset falls roughly between 6pm and 6:40pm all year. Arrive about an hour before. That gives you time to find a spot, set up and eat before the light goes.
- Dry season (around April to October): the most reliable skies and the best picnic weather.
- Wet season (around November to March): afternoon storms are common. Check the forecast and have a plan B, like a villa terrace.
- Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends at every beach on this list.
What to pack
- An insulated cooler bag with two or three ice packs
- A thick blanket or mat, plus a light sarong to cover the food
- A small board and knife for cutting cheese, bread and fruit
- Reusable plates, cutlery and cloth napkins
- Plenty of cold water, iced tea or fresh coconut
- Insect repellent for when the sun goes down
- A phone torch or small lamp for the walk back
- A bag for all your rubbish
Picnic food ideas that travel well
The best picnic food needs little prep on site, holds its shape in the heat and can be eaten with your hands.
Caprese skewers
Thread ciliegini or bocconcini onto skewers with cherry tomatoes and basil. Pack the olive oil, salt and pepper separately and dress them just before eating.
A burrata you open on the blanket
A burrata or burratina is the centrepiece every picnic photo needs. Keep it sealed in its liquid inside the cooler, open it at the spot and serve it with bread, tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil. Plan to finish it in one sitting.
Stracciatella and focaccia
Spoon stracciatella onto torn focaccia with a little salt and olive oil. Carry it in its own sealed tub, and bring a clean spoon.
Sandwiches with firmer cheese
Sliced caciotta, smoked scamorza or Tomi black pepper hold up much better in warm weather than fresh cheese. Make the sandwiches at home, wrap them in baking paper and they are ready to eat.
A simple cheese board
Mix textures and flavours: pecorino for something sharp and salty, brie for something soft, and fresh goat cheese for something tangy. Add crackers, grapes, dried fruit and nuts.
Something sweet
Fill small jars with ricotta, a spoon of honey and sliced mango or passionfruit. Screw the lids on and keep them in the cooler until dessert.
How to keep fresh cheese cold at the beach
Fresh cheese is at its best cool, not warm. A few simple habits make all the difference.
- Keep everything in the fridge until you walk out the door.
- Pack fresh cheese at the bottom of the cooler, right next to the ice packs.
- Leave mozzarella, bocconcini and burrata in their own liquid until you serve them.
- Only take out what you are about to eat, and keep the cooler in the shade.
- Aim to finish fresh cheese within about an hour of opening it. Leftover burrata does not survive the trip home.

Leave the spot as you found it
Bali's beaches and cliffs stay beautiful because people look after them. Take every piece of rubbish home with you, including food scraps, and skip single-use plastic where you can.
Order your picnic cheese before you go
We make our cheese fresh in Bali and deliver across the island, so it arrives cold and only days old. Order a day ahead and it will be in your fridge before the picnic.
